Stop Treating Cybersecurity as an Afterthought

Stop Treating Cybersecurity as an Afterthought

Running a business requires you to juggle dozens of priorities, and unfortunately, keeping your technology secure often falls right to the bottom of the list. It is easy to look at cybersecurity as an over-emphasised threat that only happens to massive corporations.

If only it were so.

Most technology-related risks aren't the result of some mastermind hacker breaking through your firewall. They are the result of simple, everyday habits that leave the door wide open. The process to fix them is actually pretty simple. Here are four common technology risks businesses face, and why doing the exact opposite is the best way to keep your business secure and productive.

Treating Software Updates as Suggestions

We are all guilty of clicking "Remind me tomorrow" when a software update notification pops up on our screens. When you are in the middle of a project, pausing to restart your computer feels like it can definitely wait. The risk here is that software updates aren't just giving you new features; they are often patching known security vulnerabilities. Leaving software unpatched is like leaving your front door unlocked because you were too busy to turn the deadbolt.

The Opposite: Automate Your Patch Management

Your first step should always be to take the decision out of the user's hands. By implementing automated patch management, updates are pushed through outside of regular business hours. This ensures your systems are protected against the latest threats without interrupting your team's workflow.

The Universal Password Strategy

Password standards demand quite a few variables to be met in order to ensure security, from minimum length requirements to certain symbols (but not others) to be included alongside an alphanumeric blend. When you take these standards into account and combine them with the fact that the average person today has dozens of online accounts, it only seems natural that someone would come up with one password that meets these requirements and use that one on repeat.

The problem is that if an attacker compromises that one password on a random website, they immediately have the keys to your business email, your financial software, and your network.

The Opposite: Use a Password Manager and Enforce MFA

A password management system can eliminate that temptation entirely. A manager generates, stores, and automatically fills in unique, complex passwords for every single account. Combine this with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) across your organization. Even if a password is stolen, the attacker still cannot access the account without the secondary physical prompt.

The "Set and Forget" Backup

I still see businesses relying on antiquated technologies (like tape backup, yuck) or assuming that just because they bought a cloud backup solution five years ago, their data is perfectly safe. Data backups are completely useless if they are corrupted, outdated, or take three weeks to restore. Downtime is an absolute thief, and relying on untested backups is a guaranteed way to bleed money when a server fails or ransomware hits.

The Opposite: Build a True Backup and Recovery Strategy

You don't just need copies of your data; you need a comprehensive strategy to eliminate downtime. This means adhering to the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, across two different storage media, with one copy stored securely offsite. A word to the wise: you must regularly test these backups to ensure you can actually restore your environment quickly when things go wrong.

Assuming Your Team Can Spot Every Scam

A lot of managers get frustrated when an employee clicks on a phishing link…but being a victim of a scam isn't your fault, and it isn't your employee's fault either. Scams are incredibly sophisticated now. They look exactly like legitimate emails from your bank, your vendors, or even you. Expecting your team to serve as a flawless, human firewall without providing them any resources is a recipe for a breach.

The Opposite: Build a Culture of Education and Empathy

I'm not going to tell you that being more mindful of these things would have prevented it, but consistent security awareness training goes a long way. Teach your employees what to look for, how to verify strange requests, and most importantly, make it safe for them to admit a mistake. If an employee clicks a bad link, you want them to report it immediately, not hide it because they are afraid of being fired.

Technology is a tool, not a replacement for human talents, and it definitely shouldn't be a source of constant anxiety. By flipping these common risks on their head, you can build an environment that naturally supports your employees rather than hindering them. It really is that easy.
